Understanding Addition

What Is Addition?

Addition is when you put two or more numbers together to find out how many you have in all. It's like collecting your favorite toys and counting them to see the total!

How Addition Works

When you add, you start with one group, then count on with another group. The answer you get is called the sum.

How to Add

  • Line up the numbers.
  • Count the first number.
  • Count on with the next number.
  • The last number you say is the answer!

Using Objects to Add

You can use your fingers, blocks, or even snacks to help you add. Drawing pictures or using number lines are also great tools.

Real-World Addition

When you help set the table, you might count forks and spoons to make sure everyone has one. That’s addition in action!

Key Formula

\[a + b = c\]

Examples

  • You have 3 apples and get 2 more. 3 + 2 = 5 apples.

  • There are 4 blue cars and 1 red car in a toy box. 4 + 1 = 5 cars.
