SSAT Middle Level Math

SSAT Middle Level Math covers essential mathematical concepts and problem-solving skills necessary for success on the SSAT exam.

Basic Concepts

Numbers and Operations

Understanding Numbers

Numbers are the building blocks of all math. In the SSAT Middle Level Math, you'll work with whole numbers, integers, fractions, decimals, and even negative numbers.

Types of Numbers

  • Whole numbers: 0, 1, 2, 3, ...
  • Integers: ... -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, ...
  • Fractions: Numbers like \( \frac{1}{2} \), \( \frac{3}{4} \)
  • Decimals: 0.5, 1.75, 3.14

Operations

  • Addition and Subtraction
  • Multiplication and Division

Order of Operations

Remember PEMDAS:

  1. Parentheses
  2. Exponents
  3. Multiplication and Division (left to right)
  4. Addition and Subtraction (left to right)

Why It Matters

Numbers and operations show up everywhere: from counting change to measuring ingredients, and even in sports statistics!

Fun Fact

Did you know calculators use the same rules you do for order of operations? Next time you enter a long calculation, see if you get the same answer!

Examples

  • Adding decimals: \( 3.6 + 4.25 = 7.85 \)

  • Multiplying fractions: \( \frac{2}{3} \times \frac{3}{4} = \frac{6}{12} = \frac{1}{2} \)

In a Nutshell

Numbers and operations are the foundation for all math problems.

Key Terms

Integer
A whole number that can be positive, negative, or zero.
Fraction
A part of a whole, expressed as one number over another.
Order of Operations
The sequence in which arithmetic operations are performed.
