What is the Subjunctive Mood?

The subjunctive is used to express wishes, doubts, emotions, recommendations, and hypothetical situations in Spanish. It's a step above basic grammar and often appears on the test.

When to Use the Subjunctive

  • Expressing doubt or uncertainty: Dudo que ella venga.
  • Giving recommendations: Es importante que estudies.
  • Expressing wishes: Ojalá que llueva mañana.

How to Form the Subjunctive

  1. Start with the first person singular (yo) form in the present tense.
  2. Drop the –o ending.
  3. Add the opposite vowel ending (ar verbs: e, es, e, emos, éis, en; er/ir verbs: a, as, a, amos, áis, an).

Example: hablarhable, hables, hable...; comercoma, comas, coma...
