Seeing Beyond the Surface

Authors use symbolism and imagery to add depth and layers to their writing. A symbol is an object, character, or event that represents something else, often an abstract concept. Imagery uses vivid language to paint mental pictures.

Spotting Symbols

• Common symbols: a dove (peace), a road (life journey), seasons (stages of life)
• Think about what objects or actions might mean beyond their literal sense.

Appreciating Imagery

• Imagery appeals to the senses: sight, sound, touch, taste, smell.
• It helps the reader visualize and experience the story more fully.
