Analyzing Author's Purpose and Tone

Why Did the Author Write This?

Understanding why an author wrote a passage and how they feel about the subject is crucial. The SAT will ask about author’s purpose (to inform, persuade, entertain, etc.) and tone (the author’s attitude).

  • Purpose: Look for clues in the introduction and conclusion.
  • Tone: Pay attention to word choice—positive, negative, sarcastic, objective?

Tips

  • Watch for emotionally charged words.
  • Ask: Is the author trying to convince, describe, or explain?

Real-World Uses

Decoding purpose and tone helps you read between the lines in news articles, emails, and even social media.
