Study of numbers, quantities, shapes, and patterns.

Basic Concepts

Numbers and Counting

What Are Numbers?

Numbers are symbols and words we use to count, measure, and label things. They allow us to answer questions like “How many apples are in the basket?” or “What is your score in the game?”

  • Types of Numbers:
    • Natural Numbers: 1, 2, 3, 4, ...
    • Whole Numbers: 0, 1, 2, 3, ...
    • Integers: ..., -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, ...

Counting in Daily Life

Counting is the first step in understanding math. It helps us keep track of objects, solve problems, and organize information.

Fun with Patterns

Counting can go forwards (1, 2, 3...) or backwards (10, 9, 8...). We can count in steps, like 2, 4, 6, 8 (skip counting by 2), which helps us see patterns.

Why Is Counting Important?

Counting is everywhere! From keeping score in sports to checking how many candies you have, numbers help us make sense of the world.

Examples

  • Counting the number of players on a soccer team.

  • Checking the time on a clock using numbers.

In a Nutshell

Numbers help us count, measure, and describe things around us.
