Using Text Evidence

Proving Your Answers with Clues from the Text

Text evidence means finding proof in the story or article to support your answer.

  • Highlight or underline the part of the text that helped you decide.
  • Use quotes from the text when answering questions.
  • Don’t just guess—back up your answer with something you read.

This strategy shows you really understand what you’re reading and helps you get the right answers!

Examples

  • You underline a sentence in the passage that explains why the character is sad.

  • You write down a quote from the story to support your answer on a short-response question.
