Foundations of Multiplication

Multiplication is Repeated Addition

Multiplication is a shortcut for adding the same number again and again. In 2nd grade, you'll start to see how groups work.

  • 3 groups of 4 is the same as 4 + 4 + 4 = 12, or \( 3 \times 4 = 12 \).

Arrays and Equal Groups

Use objects, drawings, or arrays (rows and columns) to show multiplication.

Real-World Use

Multiplication helps you figure out things like how many wheels are on 5 bikes, or how many cookies are in 3 boxes of 6.

Key Formula

\( 2 \times 5 = 10 \)

Examples

  • Finding out how many legs are on 4 chairs.

  • Counting how many eggs in 3 cartons of 12 eggs each.

In a Nutshell

Start to multiply by grouping and using repeated addition.
