Adding and Subtracting Big Numbers

Addition and subtraction are ways to join numbers together or take them apart. In 2nd grade, you’ll add and subtract numbers up to 1,000, including using regrouping (carrying or borrowing).

Tips for Adding

• Line up the numbers by place value.
• Add the ones, then the tens, then the hundreds.
• If a sum is more than 9, regroup to the next place.

• If you can’t subtract, borrow from the next place.
