Using Context Clues

Unlocking the Meaning of Unknown Words

Sometimes you find a word you don't know. You can use the words and sentences around it—called context clues—to figure out what it means.

Types of Context Clues

  • Definition: The word is explained right there.
    A habitat is a place where animals live.
  • Synonym: A similar word is used.
    He was joyful, or very happy.
  • Example: An example is given.
    Many fruits, such as apples, bananas, and oranges, are tasty.

Why Use Context Clues?

  • The arid desert, which is very dry, has little water.

  • She felt drowsy, so she went to bed early.
