Sentence Structure and Grammar

Building Strong Sentences

Sentences are how we share our ideas. Good sentences have the right words in the right order and use proper punctuation.

Parts of a Sentence

Every sentence has a subject (who or what the sentence is about) and a predicate (what the subject does).

  • Subject: The dog
  • Predicate: ran fast.

Together, they make: The dog ran fast.

Using Punctuation

Remember to start sentences with a capital letter and end them with a period, question mark, or exclamation mark.

Why Grammar Is Important

Grammar helps your writing make sense, so everyone understands your stories and ideas!

Examples

  • Turn 'jumped the cat on the mat' into 'The cat jumped on the mat.'

  • Add a question mark to 'Where is my pencil' to make it 'Where is my pencil?'

In a Nutshell

Good grammar and sentence structure make your ideas clear.
