Geometry: Area, Perimeter, and Volume

Measuring Shapes and Spaces

Geometry is all about shapes, sizes, and how much space they take up. You'll learn how to find the area, perimeter, and volume of different figures.

Perimeter

The perimeter is the distance around a shape. Add up the lengths of all sides.

Area

The area is the amount of space inside a shape.

  • Rectangle: \( \text{Area} = \text{length} \times \text{width} \)
  • Triangle: \( \text{Area} = \frac{1}{2} \times \text{base} \times \text{height} \)

Volume

Volume measures how much space a 3D object holds.

  • Rectangular prism: \( \text{Volume} = \text{length} \times \text{width} \times \text{height} \)

Why It Matters

Knowing these helps with real-life problems like building, wrapping gifts, or finding out how much a container holds.

Examples

  • Finding the area of a garden that's 6 feet by 4 feet: \( 6 \times 4 = 24 \) square feet.

  • Calculating the volume of a box that's 2 ft by 3 ft by 4 ft: \( 2 \times 3 \times 4 = 24 \) cubic feet.

In a Nutshell

Geometry helps you measure and understand the shapes and spaces around you.
