ISEE Middle Level Math

ISEE Middle Level Math covers essential mathematical concepts and problem-solving skills needed for middle school students preparing for the ISEE exam.

Basic Concepts

Fractions, Decimals, and Percents

Making Sense of Parts and Wholes

Sometimes you need to show part of a whole, like eating half a pizza or getting 80% on a test. That's where fractions, decimals, and percents come in!

Fractions

A fraction like \( \frac{3}{5} \) means 3 out of 5 equal parts. The top number (numerator) tells how many parts you have, and the bottom number (denominator) tells the total number of parts.

Decimals

Decimals are another way to show parts of a whole. For example, 0.5 is the same as \( \frac{1}{2} \).

Percents

Percents are out of 100. For example, 75% means 75 out of 100, or \( \frac{75}{100} \), which is 0.75.

Converting Between Forms

  • Fraction to decimal: Divide the numerator by the denominator.
  • Decimal to percent: Multiply by 100 and add the percent sign.
  • Percent to fraction: Write over 100 and simplify.

Real-Life Uses

You use these every day, from figuring out sale prices (percents) to measuring ingredients (fractions).

Examples

  • 0.25 is the same as \( \frac{1}{4} \) or 25%.

  • If you get 18 out of 20 questions right, that's \( \frac{18}{20} = 0.9 = 90% \).

In a Nutshell

Fractions, decimals, and percents help you work with parts of a whole.
