Adding and Subtracting Numbers

Addition means putting numbers together to get a bigger number. Subtraction means taking away to get a smaller number.

• Addition uses the \( + \) sign.
• Subtraction uses the \( - \) sign.

Steps to Add or Subtract

1. Line up the numbers by their place values.
2. Start from the right (ones place) and move left.
3. If needed, carry over (for addition) or borrow (for subtraction).
