An engaging course covering all the essential math concepts tested on the HSPT exam, with real-world applications and problem-solving strategies.

Basic Concepts

Numbers and Operations

Understanding Numbers

Numbers come in all shapes and sizes! From counting your favorite snacks (natural numbers) to dealing with temperatures below zero (negative numbers), understanding numbers is key to solving math problems.

Types of Numbers

  • Whole numbers: 0, 1, 2, 3, ...
  • Integers: ..., -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, ...
  • Fractions: Pieces of a whole, like \( \frac{1}{2} \)
  • Decimals: Another way to show parts of a whole, like 0.5

Basic Operations

Add, subtract, multiply, and divide with all kinds of numbers. Don't forget the order of operations (PEMDAS): Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication/Division, Addition/Subtraction.

Real-World Connections

You use these skills every day! Whether you're splitting a pizza with friends or calculating your allowance, numbers and operations are everywhere.

Practice Tip

Try solving problems step by step and always double-check your work!

Examples

  • Adding fractions to find out how much pizza is left after a party.

  • Using subtraction to figure out how many points you need to win a game.
