Sounding Out Words

Break Words into Sounds

If you find a new word, try saying each sound one at a time. Then put the sounds together to read the word. This is called sounding out, and it's a great way to tackle new words all by yourself!

Why It Works

  • Helps you read words you haven’t seen before
  • Makes you a strong, independent reader

Examples

  • Say 'b-a-t' slowly, then blend it to say 'bat.'

  • Try to sound out the word 'hat' by saying each letter sound.
