Basic Concepts

Building Simple Words

Making Words from Letters

Once you know your letters and sounds, you can start putting them together to make words! This is called blending. Blending is when you say each sound in a word and then say them together, like making a sandwich with sounds.

Blending Sounds

Here’s how you do it:

  1. Say each letter sound slowly.
  2. Push the sounds together.
  3. Say the whole word quickly.

Try with the word "cat":

  • Say "c" (as in 'k'), "a" (as in 'ah'), "t" (as in 'tuh').
  • Blend them: "c-a-t," then "cat"!

Why It Matters

Blending helps you read new words and understand what you see in books and signs everywhere you go.

Examples

  • Sound out and read the word 'dog.'

  • Write 'sun' by saying each sound and writing the matching letters.
