Introduction to Probability

What is Probability?

Probability is a way of measuring how likely something is to happen. It ranges from 0 (impossible) to 1 (certain).

Calculating Probability

If all outcomes are equally likely, the probability of an event is:

\[ P(\text{Event}) = \frac{\text{Number of Favorable Outcomes}}{\text{Total Number of Possible Outcomes}} \]

Everyday Uses of Probability

Probability helps us predict the chance of rain, the likelihood of winning a game, or the risk of catching a cold.

Probability Vocabulary

  • Experiment: An action with uncertain results (like flipping a coin).
  • Outcome: The result of an experiment.
  • Event: A set of outcomes we're interested in.

Examples

  • Finding the chance of rolling a 6 on a standard die.

  • Predicting whether your school basketball team will win their next game.

In a Nutshell

Probability tells us how likely things are to happen using numbers between 0 and 1.
