Common Core: High School - Statistics and Probability

Explore the principles of statistics and probability, equipping high school students with essential skills for data analysis and informed decision-making.

Basic Concepts

Describing and Summarizing Data

How Do We Summarize Data?

Large amounts of data can be overwhelming. That's why statisticians use measures of central tendency and spread to summarize it.

Measures of Central Tendency

  • Mean: The average value.
  • Median: The middle value when data is ordered.
  • Mode: The most frequently occurring value.

Measures of Spread

  • Range: Difference between the highest and lowest values.
  • Interquartile Range (IQR): The spread of the middle 50% of data.
  • Standard Deviation: Tells us how much values typically differ from the mean.

Visualizing Data

Graphs like histograms, box plots, and scatter plots help us see patterns at a glance.

Examples

  • Calculating the mean score on a math test to see how the class performed.

  • Making a bar graph to show the popularity of different snacks.

In a Nutshell

Statisticians use averages and graphs to make big groups of numbers easier to understand.
