Understanding Area, Surface Area, and Volume

Shapes All Around: Area, Surface Area, and Volume

Area tells us how much space is inside a flat shape. Surface area is the total area covering a 3D object. Volume is the space inside a 3D object.

Key Formulas

  • Area of a Rectangle: \( \text{Area} = \text{length} \times \text{width} \)
  • Volume of a Rectangular Prism: \( \text{Volume} = \text{length} \times \text{width} \times \text{height} \)

Why Know This?

These measurements help us figure out how much carpet covers a floor, how much paint is needed for a box, or how much water a tank holds.

Explore at Home

Find boxes and measure their sides to practice finding area and volume!

Examples

  • A room that is 10 ft by 12 ft has an area of 120 square feet.

  • A fish tank that is 2 ft by 1 ft by 1 ft has a volume of 2 cubic feet.

In a Nutshell

Area, surface area, and volume measure space in two- and three-dimensions.
