Volume and Measurement

Filling Up Space

Volume tells you how much space something takes up, like how much water fits in a bottle.

Measuring Volume

The volume of a rectangular prism (like a box) can be found using:

  • \( \text{Volume} = \text{Length} \times \text{Width} \times \text{Height} \)

Example: A box that is 2 cm long, 3 cm wide, and 4 cm high has a volume of \( 2 \times 3 \times 4 = 24 \) cubic centimeters.

Why Volume Matters

Knowing how much something holds is useful for packing, pouring drinks, or building things.

Real-World Fun

  • Figuring out how many juice boxes fit in a cooler.
  • Measuring water for a recipe.

Examples

  • A fish tank 10 cm long, 5 cm wide, and 8 cm high holds \( 10 \times 5 \times 8 = 400 \) cubic centimeters of water.

  • A cereal box that's 20 cm by 4 cm by 30 cm holds \( 20 \times 4 \times 30 = 2,400 \) cubic centimeters.

In a Nutshell

Volume measures how much space an object takes up.
