Common Core: 4th Grade Math

This subject covers essential 4th grade math concepts aligned with Common Core standards, including operations, fractions, and measurement.

Basic Concepts

Whole Number Operations

Adding and Subtracting Large Numbers

In 4th grade, you’ll work with bigger numbers than ever before! Addition and subtraction can be done with numbers up to the millions. When you add or subtract, always line up the digits according to their place value columns: ones, tens, hundreds, and so on.

Multiplying and Dividing

Multiplication is repeated addition, and division is splitting things into equal groups. You’ll multiply up to four-digit numbers by one-digit numbers, and divide larger numbers by one-digit numbers. Learning your multiplication tables makes this much easier!

Real-World Connections

These skills help you solve problems like finding out how much money you have after spending some, or how many seats are needed for a school event.

Tips

  • Always check your math by estimating.
  • Use math strategies like breaking numbers apart (decomposing) to make calculations easier.

Examples

  • There are 3,257 people at a concert. If 1,246 leave, how many are left?

  • A school has 4 hallways with 123 lockers each. How many lockers in total?

In a Nutshell
