Practical Applications

Counting Money and Making Change

Money Matters

Counting coins and bills is a big part of real life! In 2nd grade, you'll learn to add up coins and bills, and figure out how much change you should get when you buy something.

Counting Coins

Add up the value of pennies (1¢), nickels (5¢), dimes (10¢), and quarters (25¢) to find the total.

Making Change

If you buy a toy for 75¢ and pay $1.00, how much change do you get? Subtract the cost from the amount you paid.

Why It's Important

Being able to count money helps you shop, save, and share with others.

Examples

  • Adding two quarters, three dimes, and a nickel to find the total.

  • Buying a snack for 60¢ with $1 and figuring out 40¢ change.
