Common Core: 2nd Grade Math

This subject covers foundational math concepts for 2nd graders, including addition, subtraction, and basic problem-solving skills.

Basic Concepts

Understanding Numbers and Place Value

Discovering Numbers

Numbers are everywhere! In 2nd grade, you'll learn to read, write, and understand numbers up to 1,000. When we talk about numbers, it's important to know what each digit means. This is called place value.

Place Value Magic

Each digit in a number has a special place. The ones place is on the right, the tens place is next, and then the hundreds place. For example, in 352:

  • The 3 is in the hundreds place and means 300.
  • The 5 is in the tens place and means 50.
  • The 2 is in the ones place and means 2.

Comparing and Ordering Numbers

You will also learn how to compare numbers using symbols like > (greater than), < (less than), and = (equal to). You can put numbers in order from smallest to largest or largest to smallest.

Why It Matters

Understanding numbers and place value helps you count money, tell time, and solve problems every day!

Examples

  • 524 has 5 hundreds, 2 tens, and 4 ones.

  • 738 > 453 because 738 is greater than 453.
