Acids, Bases, and Solution Chemistry

The Power of Acids and Bases

Acids release hydrogen ions (\( H^+ \)) in water, while bases release hydroxide ions (\( OH^- \)). The pH scale (0-14) measures how acidic or basic a solution is.

  • Acids: Sour taste, turn litmus paper red, react with metals.
  • Bases: Bitter taste, slippery feel, turn litmus paper blue.

Solutions: Mixing Things Up

A solution is a mixture where one substance (solute) is dissolved in another (solvent). Water is called the "universal solvent" because it dissolves so many things.

Neutralization

When an acid and base mix, they neutralize each other, often forming water and a salt.

Everyday Impact

Acids and bases are found in everything from lemon juice to soap, and solution chemistry helps us purify water and make medicines.

Examples

  • Antacids neutralize stomach acid to relieve heartburn.

  • Saltwater is a solution where salt (solute) dissolves in water (solvent).

In a Nutshell

Acids and bases interact in solutions, affecting pH and enabling many important chemical processes.
