Inverse Operations

What Are Inverse Operations?

Inverse operations are pairs of math actions that undo each other. When you add and then subtract the same number, you end up where you started!

Pairs of Inverse Operations

  • Addition and Subtraction
  • Multiplication and Division

How Inverses Work

If you add 5 and then subtract 5, you’re back to where you started. If you multiply by 2 and then divide by 2, you’re also back at the start!

Why Inverses Matter

Inverse operations help you check your work and solve math puzzles.

Examples

  • 8 + 2 = 10 and 10 - 2 = 8

  • 6 × 3 = 18 and 18 ÷ 3 = 6

In a Nutshell

Inverse operations undo each other and help you solve and check problems.
