Modifiers and Placement

Placing Modifiers Correctly

Modifiers are words or phrases (like adjectives or adverbs) that describe other words. Misplaced or dangling modifiers can make sentences confusing or funny—sometimes by accident!

Identifying Modifiers

  • Misplaced Modifier: Placed too far from what it’s describing.
  • Dangling Modifier: The thing being described isn’t even in the sentence!

Fixing Modifiers

Place the modifier as close as possible to the word it describes.

  • Misplaced: Walking down the street, the trees were beautiful.
  • Correct: Walking down the street, I thought the trees were beautiful.

Real-World Impact

Proper modifier placement helps your writing make sense and prevents embarrassing misunderstandings.

Examples

  • Covered in chocolate, Mary ate the strawberries.

  • Eager to impress the teacher, the essay was submitted early.

In a Nutshell

Modifiers must be placed next to what they describe to avoid confusion.
