7th Grade Math

Pre-algebra concepts, geometry, and statistical thinking for seventh grade students.

Advanced Topics

Geometry: Area, Surface Area, and Volume

Measuring Shapes and Solids

Geometry isn't just about flat shapes—it's also about space! You'll learn to calculate area (the space inside a shape), surface area (the total area covering a 3D object), and volume (how much space a 3D object contains).

Formulas

  • Area of a rectangle: \(A = l \times w\)
  • Surface area of a cube: \(SA = 6s^2\)
  • Volume of a rectangular prism: \(V = l \times w \times h\)

Applications

Whether you're covering a floor with tiles, wrapping a present, or filling a fish tank, geometry helps you figure out how much material you need.

Visualizing 3D

Drawing nets (unfolded 3D shapes) can help you see all the faces you need to measure.

Examples

  • Finding how much paint is needed to cover a box-shaped wall.

  • Calculating how many cubic inches of water fit in an aquarium.

In a Nutshell

Geometry lets us measure and understand the world of shapes, both flat and solid.
