7th Grade Math

Pre-algebra concepts, geometry, and statistical thinking for seventh grade students.

Basic Concepts

Integers and Rational Numbers

Understanding Numbers Beyond Zero

In seventh grade, you'll start working with a wider range of numbers, including negative numbers and fractions. These are called integers (which include positive and negative whole numbers, and zero) and rational numbers (fractions and decimals that can be written as a ratio of two integers).

Adding and Subtracting Integers

When adding or subtracting integers, think of a number line. Moving right increases the value, moving left decreases it. If you combine a positive and a negative, you're finding the difference between the two.

Rational Numbers in Everyday Life

Rational numbers aren't just math magic—they're everywhere! When you measure ingredients, track temperature, or keep score in games, you're using rational numbers.

Why It Matters

Mastering these numbers helps you solve real-world problems like managing money, measuring distances, and understanding data.

Tips

  • Use a number line to visualize positive and negative numbers.
  • Remember: subtracting a negative is the same as adding!

Examples

  • Calculating the difference in elevation between a mountain peak (+2000 ft) and a valley (-500 ft).

  • Comparing a temperature of -3°C to 5°C.

In a Nutshell

Integers and rational numbers expand our ability to describe quantities and solve practical problems.
