Solving One-Step Algebraic Equations

Solving Equations in One Step

One-step equations are the simplest kind of algebra problem. You only need to do one thing—like add, subtract, multiply, or divide—to find the answer.

How to Solve

  • If the equation is \( x + 5 = 9 \), subtract 5 from both sides: \( x = 4 \).
  • If the equation is \( 3x = 12 \), divide both sides by 3: \( x = 4 \).

Why It Matters

Solving equations is a superpower! You can figure out unknowns in all sorts of problems.

Quick Check

Always plug your answer back into the original equation to make sure it works.

Examples

  • If x + 7 = 12, subtract 7 from both sides to get x = 5.

  • If 4x = 20, divide both sides by 4 to get x = 5.

In a Nutshell

One-step equations can be solved by doing the opposite operation to both sides.
