Identifying Main Idea and Supporting Details

Finding the Main Point

Every story or article has a main idea—what it's mostly about. Supporting details are the facts or examples that help explain or prove the main idea.

How to Spot the Main Idea

  • Look for repeated words or themes.
  • The main idea is often in the first or last sentence of a paragraph.
  • Ask yourself, "What is the author trying to tell me?"

Supporting Details

  • These are the clues that help explain the main idea.
  • They can be facts, descriptions, or examples.

Real-World Uses

Finding the main idea helps you take notes in class, write book reports, and understand news articles.

Examples

  • In a passage about recycling, the main idea is 'Recycling helps our planet,' and details explain how.

  • A story about teamwork gives examples of how friends work together to win a game.

In a Nutshell

The main idea is the big message; supporting details are the proof.
