3rd Grade Math

Multiplication, division, and more complex problem-solving strategies for third grade students.

Basic Concepts

Understanding Division

What is Division?

Division is splitting a big group into equal smaller groups. It's the opposite of multiplication!

How Division Works

Imagine you have 12 candies and you want to share them with 4 friends. You divide 12 by 4, so each friend gets \( 12 \div 4 = 3 \) candies.

Real-World Division

Division helps us share things equally, solve problems, and understand how numbers fit together.

Tips for Division

  • Use counters or objects to split into groups.
  • Draw circles and put items into them evenly.
  • Remember, division is like "fair sharing."

Examples

  • 18 pencils shared among 6 students: \(18 \div 6 = 3\) pencils each.

  • 20 cookies divided into 5 bags: \(20 \div 5 = 4\) cookies per bag.

In a Nutshell

Division is splitting a large group into smaller equal groups.
