Analyzing Author’s Purpose and Tone

Why Did the Author Write This?

Every author writes for a reason—maybe to inform, persuade, entertain, or explain. Understanding the purpose helps you answer tricky SSAT questions.

Clues to Purpose

  • Look for persuasive language if the author wants you to agree.
  • Notice if the passage is mostly facts (informative) or tells a story (entertain).
  • Ask: What does the author want me to think, feel, or do?

Tone: The Author’s Attitude

Tone is the author’s attitude toward the subject. Is it serious, playful, angry, or sarcastic? Word choice often reveals tone.

Everyday Example

When you write a letter to a friend, your tone might be friendly. In a speech, you might sound persuasive. Recognizing these differences in reading helps you understand the text more deeply.

Examples

  • Spotting a sarcastic tone in a review of a movie.

  • Recognizing that a passage is meant to persuade readers to recycle.
