PSAT Math

A comprehensive guide to mastering the math concepts tested on the PSAT, including real-world applications and testing strategies.

Basic Concepts

Numbers and Operations

Understanding Numbers

Numbers are the foundation of all math you'll see on the PSAT. These include integers, fractions, decimals, and real numbers.

  • Integers are whole numbers, both positive and negative, including zero.
  • Fractions represent parts of a whole and can be converted to decimals.
  • Decimals are another way to express fractions, using powers of ten.

Operations

Operations are how we manipulate numbers: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. The PSAT will expect you to use these fluently, often in combination.

Order of Operations

Always remember the order: Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication & Division (left to right), Addition & Subtraction (left to right)—often remembered as PEMDAS.

Real-World Example

Picture planning a group trip. You need to split the cost of tickets, snacks, and transportation among friends. Knowing how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions and decimals will make sure everyone pays their fair share!

Examples

  • Adding \( \frac{3}{4} + \frac{1}{2} = \frac{5}{4} = 1.25 \)

  • Multiplying decimals: \( 0.4 \times 0.25 = 0.10 \)

In a Nutshell

Basic math operations with all types of numbers are the building blocks for PSAT Math.

Key Terms

Integer
A whole number (positive, negative, or zero).
Fraction
A number representing part of a whole.
Decimal
A number that uses a decimal point to show a value less than one.
PEMDAS
A mnemonic for the order of operations: Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication & Division, Addition & Subtraction.
