Active Reading Strategies

Supercharge Your Reading

Active reading means doing more than just looking at the words. It involves thinking, questioning, and making predictions as you go.

How to Be an Active Reader

  • Ask questions about what you’re reading.
  • Make predictions about what might happen next.
  • Summarize sections in your own words.
  • Highlight or take notes (if allowed).

By staying engaged, you’ll understand and remember more, which is a huge help on tests!

Examples

  • You pause to ask yourself why a character made a certain choice.

  • You jot down a quick summary of each paragraph while reading.
