Understanding Vocabulary in Context

Cracking the Code of New Words

You’ll often come across words you don’t know. But don’t worry! Authors usually give you clues in the sentences around the word—these are called context clues.

Types of Context Clues

  • Definition: The word is explained right there.
  • Synonym: A similar word is used nearby.
  • Antonym: The opposite meaning is given.
  • Example: The word is shown through examples.
  • General sense: The overall meaning of the sentence helps.

Why It Matters

Understanding new words helps you follow the story or information, answer questions, and become a stronger reader.

Real-World Connection

Learning to figure out new words is helpful in every subject—and even when reading instructions, signs, or online.

Examples

  • ‘The arid desert was dry and hot.’ You can tell arid means dry.

  • ‘Unlike his gregarious brother, Max was shy.’ The word unlike shows Max is the opposite of gregarious, which means outgoing.
