Evaluating Arguments and Persuasive Techniques

Deciding If an Argument Is Strong

Sometimes, writers try to convince you to agree with them. To do this, they use arguments and persuasive techniques. It’s important to know how to spot these and decide if they make sense.

Persuasive Techniques

  • Facts and Evidence: Using true information to support a point.
  • Appeals to Emotion: Trying to make you feel a certain way.
  • Repetition: Saying something over and over to make it stick.
  • Bandwagon: Suggesting everyone else is doing it, so you should too.

Evaluating Arguments

  • Check if the evidence really supports the claim.
  • Look out for tricks that sound good but aren’t true.
  • Decide if the argument is fair and logical.

Why It’s Important

These skills help you make smart choices when reading advertisements, online posts, or even listening to speeches.

Examples

  • Reading an ad that says 'everyone loves this game!' and realizing it's using the bandwagon technique.

  • Noticing that a writer uses facts and statistics to prove their point in an opinion article.
