Parts of Speech

Understanding the Building Blocks of Sentences

Every sentence is made up of words that play different roles. These roles are called "parts of speech." There are eight main parts of speech in English grammar:

  • Nouns: Names of people, places, things, or ideas.
  • Pronouns: Words that take the place of nouns.
  • Verbs: Words that show action or state of being.
  • Adjectives: Words that describe nouns.
  • Adverbs: Words that describe verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs.
  • Prepositions: Words that show relationships between nouns or pronouns and other words.
  • Conjunctions: Words that join words or groups of words.
  • Interjections: Words that express strong emotion.

Why Does This Matter?

Knowing the parts of speech helps you build sentences that make sense and communicate your ideas clearly.

Real-World Application

When you write a story or an email, you use all these parts of speech without even realizing it! Understanding them helps you choose the right words for every situation.

Examples

  • The quick brown fox (noun) jumps (verb) over the lazy dog (noun).

  • Wow (interjection), you did a great (adjective) job!
