Figuring Out Unknown Words

If you see a word you don't know, look for clues in the sentence or paragraph.

  • Read around the word to see how it's used
  • Look for definitions or examples nearby
  • Think about what would make sense in the sentence

Examples

  • Figuring out that 'gargantuan' means very big because the sentence says the 'gargantuan bear towered over the trees.'

  • Guessing that 'scurry' means to move quickly because the mice 'scurried across the floor.'
