Subject-Verb Agreement

Making Subjects and Verbs Match

In sentences, the subject and the verb need to "agree"—this means they must both be singular or both be plural.

How It Works

  • If the subject is one thing, the verb usually ends with "-s".
  • If the subject is more than one, the verb usually does not end with "-s".

Why Does This Matter?

Matching them correctly helps your sentences sound right and make sense to your reader.

Real-World Application

When writing instructions for a group, you need to make sure your verbs match your subjects so everyone understands what to do.

Examples

  • The dog runs fast.

  • The dogs run fast.

In a Nutshell

Subjects and verbs must match in number to keep sentences correct.
