Using Context Clues

Figuring Out Unknown Words

If you find a word you don't know, look at the other words and pictures around it. These are called context clues! They help you guess the meaning of new words.

How to Use Context Clues

  • Reread the sentence
  • Look for words or pictures that explain the new word
  • Try to use the new word in a sentence of your own

Using context clues makes reading easier and helps you learn more words!

Examples

  • Using a picture of a happy dog to figure out that 'joyful' means happy.

  • Guessing what 'enormous' means by reading 'The enormous elephant was bigger than a house.'
