Verbal Reasoning Fundamentals

Unlocking Verbal Reasoning

The Verbal Reasoning section tests your vocabulary and ability to understand word relationships. It focuses on two main types of questions: synonyms and sentence completion.

Synonyms

You’ll need to select a word with the same meaning as the one given.

  • Tip: Read the word in a sentence to help recall its meaning.

Sentence Completion

Fill in the blank with the word that best completes the sentence.

  • Tip: Think about the context of the sentence and eliminate choices that don’t fit.

Building Vocabulary

Reading books, articles, and even comic strips can help you expand your vocabulary. The more words you know, the easier this section becomes!

Why Is This Important?

Verbal reasoning shows how well you can understand and use language—skills you’ll use every day in school and beyond.

Practice Makes Perfect

The more you practice, the better you get at spotting the right answer quickly.

Examples

  • Finding the synonym for 'elated' as 'happy'.

  • Completing the sentence: 'The chef was so ___ that he made three cakes in an hour.' (Answer: efficient)
