Analogies

Unlocking the Power of Analogies

Analogies ask you to find relationships between pairs of words. They're like puzzles: if "cat is to kitten" as "dog is to ___," what’s the answer? (Puppy!)

Types of Analogies

  • Synonym/Antonym: Words with similar or opposite meanings.
  • Part to Whole: One word is a part of the other.
  • Cause and Effect: One word causes the other.
  • Function: What does one do for the other?

Steps to Solve Analogies

  1. Describe the relationship between the first pair.
  2. Apply the same relationship to the second pair.
  3. Eliminate choices that don’t fit the relationship.

Practice Makes You Better

The more analogies you solve, the better you get at spotting patterns in language—and in life!

Examples

  • Bird : Fly :: Fish : Swim

  • Pencil : Write :: Scissors : Cut
