Eliminating Wrong Answers

Narrow Down Your Choices

On multiple-choice questions, there are usually a couple of answers that just don’t make sense. Cross them out! Eliminating wrong answers makes it easier to spot the right one—even if you’re not sure at first.

  • Look for answers that are too extreme or not mentioned.
  • Cross off answers that don’t match the main idea.
  • If you can’t find the answer right away, eliminate as many as possible first.

This strategy boosts your odds and can help you stay calm during the test.

Examples

  • Eliminating two answers that use words not found in the passage.

  • Crossing off an answer that gives an opinion when the question asks for a fact.
