ISEE Lower Level Quantitative Reasoning

A fun, interactive introduction to quantitative reasoning skills for the ISEE Lower Level exam.

Basic Concepts

Numbers and Operations

Understanding Numbers

Numbers are everywhere! From counting your toys to tracking scores in a game, numbers help us make sense of the world. In this section, you'll learn about whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and how to use them in fun and practical ways.

Operations with Numbers

Operations are actions you can perform with numbers, like adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing. Mastering these basics helps you solve all kinds of puzzles and problems.

  • Addition is combining numbers: \( 4 + 3 = 7 \)
  • Subtraction is taking away: \( 7 - 2 = 5 \)
  • Multiplication is repeated addition: \( 3 \times 4 = 12 \)
  • Division is splitting into equal parts: \( 12 \div 3 = 4 \)

Fractions and Decimals

Sometimes, things aren't whole. That's where fractions (like \( \frac{1}{2} \)) and decimals (like 0.5) come in. They help us talk about parts of things, like half a pizza!

When Will You Use This?

Whether you’re figuring out how much money you need for a toy, splitting a snack with friends, or measuring ingredients for cookies, numbers and operations are your best friends.

Examples

  • You have 10 candies and give 3 to your friend. How many do you have left?

  • You cut a cake into 4 equal pieces. What fraction is one piece?
