Analogies and Relationships

Making Connections

Analogies test your ability to see relationships between words. They often appear as "A is to B as C is to D" questions.

Types of Relationships

  • Synonyms (happy : joyful)
  • Antonyms (hot : cold)
  • Part to whole (finger : hand)
  • Cause and effect (rain : flood)

Solving Analogies

  • Figure out the relationship between the first pair.
  • Apply the same relationship to the second pair.

Why Analogies Matter

They help you think logically and spot patterns, which is useful in many real-world situations.

Examples

  • Puppy is to dog as kitten is to cat.

  • Leaf is to tree as petal is to flower.

In a Nutshell

Analogies help you understand how words and ideas are connected.
