Basic Concepts

Numbers and Operations

Understanding Types of Numbers

Numbers come in many types, including whole numbers, integers, fractions, and decimals. Each type has its unique characteristics and uses.

  • Whole numbers: \(0, 1, 2, 3, ...\)
  • Integers: \(..., -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, ...\)
  • Fractions: Represent parts of a whole, like \( \frac{1}{2} \)
  • Decimals: Another way to show parts of a whole, like \(0.75\)

Basic Operations

The four main operations are addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. These operations are the building blocks for all mathematical calculations.

Order of Operations

The order in which you solve problems matters! Use PEMDAS:

  • Parentheses
  • Exponents
  • Multiplication and Division (left to right)
  • Addition and Subtraction (left to right)

Real-World Uses

From budgeting your money to dividing pizza slices among friends, numbers and operations are everywhere in daily life.

Key Formula

\[PEMDAS\]

Examples

  • Adding decimals when shopping: $4.25 + $3.40 = $7.65

  • Dividing a pizza into 8 slices for 4 friends: 8 ÷ 4 = 2 slices each

In a Nutshell

Learn about different types of numbers and the rules for operating with them.

Key Terms

Integer
A whole number that can be positive, negative, or zero.
Fraction
A part of a whole, represented as one number over another.
Decimal
A number that uses a decimal point to show a value smaller than one.
