Sounding Out Words

Breaking Words Into Sounds

When you see a new word, say each sound slowly to figure it out! Sounding out words helps you read new words by blending the letter sounds together.

How to Do It:

  • Point to each letter in the word.
  • Say the sound for each letter.
  • Blend the sounds together to say the word.

Sounding out words makes reading easier and helps you remember new words!

Examples

  • Reading 'cat' by saying /c/ /a/ /t/.

  • Blending /s/ /u/ /n/ to read 'sun'.
