Using an AED (Automated External Defibrillator)

What Is an AED?

An AED is a portable device that checks the heart rhythm and can deliver an electric shock to help the heart re-start in certain emergencies.

Step-by-Step AED Use

  1. Turn it on and follow the voice prompts.
  2. Expose the chest and attach the sticky pads as shown on the device.
  3. Let the AED analyze the heart rhythm. No one should touch the person.
  4. Shock if advised: Loudly say “Clear!” and press the shock button.
  5. Continue CPR as instructed by the device.

AEDs are designed for anyone to use, with clear visual and audio instructions.

Real-World Impact

AEDs in public spaces have saved countless lives. Every minute without defibrillation reduces survival by about 10%.

Key Formula

\[Survival\ Rate = Initial\ Rate \times (0.90)^{minutes\ without\ AED}\]

Examples

  • A mall security guard grabs an AED and uses it on a shopper who collapses.

  • A teammate uses an AED at a soccer game before EMS arrives.

In a Nutshell

AEDs deliver life-saving shocks and are simple enough for bystanders to use.

Key Terms

Defibrillation
Delivering an electric shock to restore normal heart rhythm.
