Fundamental mathematical operations and concepts for everyday use.

Basic Concepts

Multiplication and Division

Doubling Up and Sharing Out

Multiplication and division are like super-powered addition and subtraction.

Multiplication

Multiplication is repeated addition. If you have several groups with the same number in each, multiply to find the total.

  • \( 4 \times 3 \) means 4 groups of 3, or \( 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12 \).

Division

Division is splitting into equal parts. If you want to share something fairly, you use division.

  • \( 12 \div 4 = 3 \) means 12 split into 4 equal parts, each part is 3.

Remember

  • Multiplication and division help with equal sharing, grouping, and scaling recipes.
  • Look for words like "product," "times," "shared," and "divided by."

Examples

  • Multiplying 5 × 7 to find out how many days in 5 weeks.

  • Dividing 24 by 6 to share snacks among friends.

In a Nutshell

Multiplication is quick adding, division is fair sharing.
